Those of us who are strong and able in the faith need to step in and lend a hand to those who falter, and not just do what is most convenient for us. Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, “How can I help?”

– Romans 15:2 (The Message translation)

There is so much we all do throughout the year to be of service to one another. This scripture is a powerful reminder that we do not serve others for the sake of status, but for the sake of community. We are here to look after one another, to share with one another, and be with one another. It’s not always convenient – the work of the Kingdom of God rarely ever is – and it’s not always easy, but it will be rewarding every time.

Every time we take 10 minutes out of our day to write a friend a note, or give someone a call; every time we treat someone to coffee, or bring someone a meal; every time we bring treats to church, or sing in the choir; every time we laugh with the children, or answer the teens’ questions; every time we donate to the local food bank, or give of our money to the church. Every time, it is always rewarding – not in stature, but in spirit.

There’s an old song my mom taught me when I was a little girl:

Love is like a magic penny, hold it tight and you won’t have any,

Lend it spend it and you’ll have so many, they’ll roll all over the floor…

For love is something if you give it away, give it away, give it away,

Love is something if you give it away, you end up having more.

Every time we give of our love, we always end up with more. This is the promise God makes to us. In our generosity, we actually receive so much. I know that every time I give or I serve, I leave feeling renewed in spirit.

Over the last two months, you all have collected items to support a refugee family so that when they are ready to settle into an apartment, they already have everything they need. Thank you for your amazing generosity. I hope God blesses each of you for how deeply you have helped a family in desperate need of love, care, and hospitality!

Let’s keep that generosity going as we dream of new ways of helping those who need it!

With love and gratitude,

Pastor Kelsey
